What Causes Asphalt Shingle Curling?

As one of the leading asphalt roofing contractors in the area, we often get asked by homeowners about asphalt shingle curling. It is one of the signs of wear and tear you’ll want to keep an eye out for every time you check your roof. But why does it happen, and what can you do about it?

Possible Culprits

You know you’re dealing with shingle curling when some of the asphalt shingles are curled at the edges. Over time, they become rigid, making them prone to further damage. When this happens, the inner layers of your roof become exposed to the elements, increasing the chances of leaks and other issues that may compromise its longevity and weather performance.

Below are the main reasons why curling happens in asphalt shingle roofs:

  • Cold Winters
A drastic temperature drop over the winter months can cause shingles to curl.
  • Lack of Attic Ventilation
Shingle curling can also occur due to blocked or inadequate vents. Either of these can cause heat and moisture to build up inside the attic, affecting the roof’s components, including the shingles themselves.
  • Substandard Asphalt Shingles
Low-quality roofing products are bound to encounter issues earlier in their lifespan than their high-performance counterparts. That’s why it pays to work with a roofing company that offers asphalt shingles from the top manufacturers in the industry.
  • Poor Installation
Improper nailing and alignment may lead to the shingles’ early deterioration, which may include signs of curling.
  • Roof Overlay
Placing shingles over an existing roof will shorten the lifespan of the new roof. Extreme heat combined with a lack of ventilation can cause shingles to curl at the edges.

What to Do About Asphalt Shingle Curling

Repairing curled asphalt shingles is an impossible task, especially if they lost most of their protective granules. At this point, the roofing system’s ability to resist the elements has been compromised, necessitating an immediate replacement from a reputable roofing contractor like Jack the Roofer. We install high-quality asphalt shingles from known manufacturers like Owens Corning®, CertainTeed® and TAMKO®.
