4 Mistakes That Are Shortening the Life of Your Roof

Your roof is your home’s primary defense against the elements. If you fail to properly maintain your roof, there is a great chance you will face a series of problems, such as leaks and mold, which cost a lot of money to fix in the future. To prevent this hassle, make sure you avoid these mistakes:

  1. Not pruning trees: Tall, overarching trees can grow too close to your roof and scrape the protective granules off your shingles or puncture the membrane of your roof. Climbing vines are another problem. When left unchecked, they can crawl underneath already loose shingles and compromise the weather barrier of your roof. Make sure you regularly prune trees around your property to get rid of this problem.
  1. Not cleaning the gutters: Leaves, birds’ nests, twigs and other debris collect in your gutters over time, and clogged gutters prevent rainwater or snowmelt from draining away from your home. As a result, overflows, soil erosion, basement flooding and foundation damage can occur. Experts recommend clearing out your gutters at least twice a year – once in fall and once in spring – so you will not have to worry about these issues.
  1. Not ventilating the attic: Attic ventilation is crucial to the longevity of your roof because it reduces the amount of moisture that builds up in your home. Periodically check your attic to make sure condensation, mold and rot are not forming anywhere. If you do see these things, there is likely an issue with your attic ventilation that a professional needs to address.
  1. Not maintaining the roof: Your roof should be inspected annually and after an extreme weather event, such as a hailstorm. Once you find a roofer to inspect your roof, they will check for any sagging, leaks, openings around the flashing, missing or damaged shingles, rotted wood and more, making sure you get them fixed before they cause bigger and more costly damage.
